How can Critical Management Studies get out of its Ivory Tower? Critical Performativity and Community Economies

Öz:
In recent years, critical management studies try to be effective in everyday life by taking itself out of its ivory tower. How this can be achieved is discussed within the concept of “critical performativitiy”. The critical performativity is against to seek abstract and grand scale outcomes; it seeks small wins within the institutionalized power relations. Small wins, however, maintain capitalist identities and practices; thus, critical performativity corresponds to mainstream management and organization studies. Thus, several researchers criticize the political aims of critical performativity. Furthermore, critical performativity cannot address the realist and adequate material conditions that determine the effectiveness of its critiques. In general, it emphasizes to change managers’ mainstream discourses. This study explains that critical performativity should benefit from community economies. Community economies are against capitalocentrism, underlining the strength of capitalism, and depend on producing anti-capitalist subjects and organizations within ethicalpolitical interactions. In this sense, community economies can guide critical performativity within the political and material aspects.
