Integration is a process that requires an enormous amount of dedication and preparation. Integrated recreation program experiences have improved the self-esteem, self-acceptance and self-confidence in children with disabilities. Integrated camp environments are also conducive for developing positive social interaction between children with disabilities and their peers. Clearly, an integrated camp that has achieved the three criteria of physical, social and program integration has the potential to provide children with disabilities, as well as their able bodied peers, with an experience from which they could benefit the rest of their lives. But, without effective staff, an integrated camp can meet none of these criteria. Staff is an essential component of a supportive environment. To ensure that all children fully benefit from their experience, all staff and volunteers must be trained effectively in the area of integration.
