The Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM) is the most frequently used scale for the assessment ofcognitive appraisals and surpasses other types of measures by including primary and secondaryappraisal processes. This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the dispositionalSAM (SAM-D) by utilizing the samples of Turkish university students (n= 470) and communitymembers (n= 170). In order to evaluate factor structure of the scale obtained by previous literature, confirmatory factor analysis is used by Amos 7.0 (Arbuckle, 2006) software program. The resultsdemonstrate that the five-factor model reveals significant results in both samples in terms ofgoodness of fit indexes in confirmatory factor analysis. Moreover, multi-group comparisons onthe basis of gender groups demonstrate no significant differences between the constrained andunconstrained models. In addition to significant internal consistency, the concurrent validity ofthe scale is supported in both samples by revealing the association of the SAM-D with conceptuallyrelated measures. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.
