New adipokines: Leptin, adiponectin and omentin

Öz:
Adipose tissue is now considered as an important part ofenergy metabolism. Adipokines secreted by adipose tissueplay decisive role in many physiological process such asenergy balance, insulin and glucose metabolism, lipid m etabolism, regulation blood pressure, vascular remodeling, coagulation and inflammation. The amount of body fatorganized by leptin, environmental factors and genes together. Leptin molecule was found to be associated withapp e tite, body weight, energy balance and a number ofneuroendocrine functions so far. The gene encoding ad iponectin is located in a loci in chromosome 3 which is closeto the locus considered responsible for type 2 diabetes andsteatosis. Gene expression of omentin -1 and plasma levelsof omentin decreased in obese subjects. Obesity relatedmarkers such as, waist circumference, body mass index andleptin levels are negatively correlated with plasma omentinlevels. Adiponectin has anti -atherogenic and insulin sensitizing effects. Therefore, drugs targeting adipokines that d erived from adipose tissue may increase insulin sensitivityand may also have protective effect against atherosclerosis.
