Prenatal Maternal - Fetal Attachment

Öz:
Based on the concept of attachment, the investigation of prenatal attachment is important. Attachment is described as an infant s attempts to try to be physically close to the mother in order to protect itself from danger. Various studies have been performed to determine what affects maternal-fetal attachment and attachment has been discovered to form prior to delivery. It has been reported that the level of maternal-fetal attachment correlates to the attachment of mother and infant in postpartum period, the psychological health of the infant and the type of attachment. An association has also been detected between an insecure attachment of mother and infant to child abuse, negative health attitudes and the psychological health of mother. A correlation has also been determined between the development of insecure maternal-fetal attachment and psychological disorders in infants. In this context, midwives/nurses are important in order to evaluate maternal-fetal attachment during antenatal care and perform appropriate interventions by detecting attachment disorders. In this review, we investigated the concepts of attachment and prenatal attachment, midwives/nurses evaluation of prenatal attachment and their responsibilities for appropriate interventions for attachment disorders.
