Conditions on Argumenthood in Turkish

Öz:
Bu çalışma Türkçede yüklemcil adöbeklerinin sözdizimsel üyelere nasıl dönüştüğü konusunu ele alır ve durum yüklemelerin yokluğunda işlevsel bir başın yüklemcil adöbeklerini sözdizimsel üyelere dönüştürdüğü önerisinde bulunur. Önceki çalışmalar sözdizimsel üyelik için iki gereklilik olduğunu göstermişlerdir: (i) görünürlülük için durum yükleme ve (ii) tip değişimi için birtakım işlevsel kategoriler tarafından sağlanan gönderimsellik belirlemesi. Türkçede ise bu iki gerekliliğin birbirleriyle yakından ilintili olduğu iddia edilmiştir. Yüklemcil adöbeklerinin üyelik için durum yüklemesi taşıması gerekliliğinin yanı sıra, durum yüklemesinin gönderimsellik belirlemesi için de gerekli olduğu savunulmuştur. Yalnız, bu iddia durum yüklemesi taşımayan ad öbeklerinin sözdizimsel üyelik statüsünün ve gönderimsel özelliğinin olmadığı anlamına gelmektedir. Bu doğru bir saptama değildir çünkü adöbekleri durum yüklemelerinin olmadığı durumlarda da hem sözdizimsel üye hem de gönderimsel olabilirler. Bu bakımdan, çalışmada adöbeklerinin üyeliğini açıklamak için dilde üyelik ve gönderimselliğin örtülü bir varoluşçu işleyici tarafından belirlendiği fikri önerilmektedir.

Türkçe Argumenthood ilgili Koşullar

Öz:
This paper explores how predicative Noun Phrases (henceforth NPs) become syntactic arguments in Turkish and proposes that in the absence case marking, a functional head turns predicative NPs into syntactic arguments. Previous studies show that there are two requirements for syntactic argumenthood: (i) case assignment for visibility and (ii) referentiality assignment for typeshifting by way of certain functional categories. In Turkish, on the other hand, it is claimed that these two conditions are closely related to each other. It is argued that not only should predicative NPs be case marked for argumenthood, but case assignment is also necessary for referentiality assignment in Turkish. However, this argument predicts that NPs without case marking remain nonreferential and predicative with no syntactic argument status. This is in fact not the case since NPs can be syntactic arguments and referential in the absence of case marking. In order to account for the argumenthood of NPs in such cases I propose the presence of a covert existential operator, ∃ , which assigns argumenthood and referentiality in the language.
