The Relationship Basal Ganglia Calcification and Level Of 25(OH)-D and Parathyroid Hormone in Patients With Parkinson's Disease

Öz:
Giriş: Parkinson hastalarında 25-Hydroksi vitamin D (25(OH)-D), paratiroid hormon (PTH)ve bazal ganglion kalsifikasyonu (BGC) seviyelerini ve aralarındaki ilişkiyi araştırmayıamaçladık.Metod: Antakya Devlet Hastanesi Nöroloji kliniğine başvuran 32 parkinson hastası ve 32sağlıklı kişi çalışmaya dahil edildi. Serumda 25(OH)-D, PTH, kalsiyum (Ca++), fosfor (PO4),total protein, albumin seviyeleri saptandı.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the levels of 25- Hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)-D), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and basal ganglia calcification(BGC) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).Method: The study population consisted of 32 patients with PD who were admitted to theNeurology Clinic of Antakya State Hospital in 2010 as well as 32 healthy control subjects.Serum 25(OH)-D, PTH, calcium (Ca++), phosphorus (PO4), total protein, and albumin levelswere determined. Brain computed tomography (CT) scans were used to show BGC. Treatedand early-mid-stage patients were selected. Results: The level of 25(OH)-D in serum were lower in patients with PD than the controlgroup (p<0.001). The level of PTH was found higher in patients with PD, but it was notstatistically significant (p>0.05). BGC was present three patients (9%) with PD and twosubjects (6%) in the control group. The presence of BGC was not statistically significant inpatients with PD compared with the control group. There were no correlations between lower25 (OH)-D and PTH concentrations in patients with PD; however the level of PTH, whichplays a role in the vitamin D metabolism, was not found different, and the presence of BGC,which plays a role in the calcium metabolism, was not found different compared with healthysubjects. Conclusions: The low level of 25 (OH)-D should cause poor control of Ca++, PO4; howeverthe level of PTH and the presence of BGC were not different significantly.
