İnanç Uğruna Ölme / Öldürme: Yeni Dinî Hareketler ve Şiddet

Öz:

20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren küresel çapta yaşanan değişmelere paralel olarak bilhassa Batı toplumlarında, "kült grupları", "tarikatlar", "yeniçağ dinleri", "yeni dinî hareketler" gibi farklı kavramlarla ifade edilen Yeni Dinî Hareketlerin (YDH) ortaya çıktığı ve kısa zamanda bu hareketlerin tüm dünyada yaygınlık kazanmaya başladıkları bilinmektedir. Nitekim çoğunlukla marjinal dinî oluşumlar olarak kendisini gösteren YDH'ler zaman zaman büyük yankı uyandıran bir takım şiddet eylemleri ile gündeme gelmişlerdir. YDH'lerin cinayet, suikast, toplu intihar gibi şiddet eylemleriyle gündeme gelmeye başlamasıyla birlikte YDH'ler ve şiddet arasında doğrudan bir ilişkinin olup olmadığı, şayet varsa bu ilişkinin hangi boyutta ve ne tür özelliklere sahip olduğu, bu hareketlerin şiddete ne derecede eğilimli olduğu, hangi faktörlerin şiddete yol açtığı gibi konular tartışılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada öncelikle YDH-şiddet ilişkisi, gerçekleştirmiş oldukları eylemlerle zihinlere kazınan ve "büyük beş" olarak da bilinen Halkın Tapınağı, Branch Davidians, Aum Shinrikyo, Güneş Mabedi ve Cennet'in Kapısı hareketleri baz alınarak örneklendirilecektir. YDH'lerin bazı doktrinler etrafında, karizmatik liderlerinin ellerinde dehşet saçan bir şiddet mekanizmasına dönüşebildiğine şahit olunmaktadır. Bu sebeple YDH'leri şiddete sevk eden temel faktörlerden ikisi olan apokaliptik inanç ve karizmatik liderlik üzerinde durulacaktır. Nihai aşamada, günümüzdeki bazı dinî grupları şiddete sevk eden faktörlerin geçmişte YDH'leri şiddete sevk eden faktörlerle benzerlik taşıyıp taşımadığı tespit edilmeye ve YDH'lerin şiddet eylemlerini azaltmak noktasında neler yapılabileceğine dair öneriler sunulmaya çalışılacaktır.

Dying and/or Killing for the Faith: New Religious Movements and Violence

Öz:

It is known that New Religious Movements (NRMs), which also named as "cult groups", "sects" and "new age religions", emerged particularly in Western socities in parallel with the changes which experienced from the second half of twentieth century on a global scale; and that these movements began to gain wide currency in a short time. NRMs, which mostly emerged as mariginal religious forms, sometimes came to the fore with world-shaking acts of violence. Thereupon, some questions are begun to be discussed: Is there a direct relationship between NRMs and violence? If there is a relationship between NRMs and violence, what is the dimension of this relationship? Are NRMs prone to violence? What are the factors that led to violence in NRMs? In this study, initially I will exemplify NRMs - violence relation refering to Peoples Temple, Branch Davidian, Aum Shinrikyo, The Order of Solar Temple and Heaven's Gate. Because these movements which known as "big five" were stuck in people's mind with their violence acts. Secondly, I will refer to two main factors that caused violence in NRMs: apocalyptic beliefs and charismatic leadership. Finally, I will try to see whether there are similarities between the factors that led to violence in today's religious violence and the factors that led to violence in NRMs in the past; and to offer some suggessions on what can be done in relation to decrease the violence of NRMs.
