Maneviyatı Dindarlıktan Ayırmak: Hilomorfik Bir Bakış Açısı

Öz:

Maneviyat (spirituality) nedir sorusu aslında mantıklı bir sorudur. Düalist1 ve hilomorfik insan tabiatı görüşlerinin önemli neticelerini değerlendirirken biz bu duruşu muhafaza ederiz. Biz, 21. yüzyıl Amerika'sında maneviyatın dindarlıktan ayrı düşünülmesi gerektiğini savunuyor, maneviyatın incelenebilmesi için kavramsal olarak netleştirilmesi gerektiğini ileri sürüyoruz. Her insanın beden ve ruh şeklinde birbiri ile uyumlu iki prensipten oluşan bir öz olduğu ve bu özün doğasının da maneviyat olduğu düşüncesini destekliyoruz. İdrak ve irade maneviyatın işlevleridir ve bu işlevlerin gerçek neticeleri de hakikat ve iyiliktir. Sağlık disiplinlerindeki ahlakçı, teorisyen, araştırmacı ve pratisyenleri, maneviyatın bu yönleri arasındaki etkileşime odaklanmaya davet ediyoruz. Maneviyatı, hayata yönelik bir tutum, hayatı anlamlandırmak, başkalarıyla ilişki kurmak ve aşkın olanla bütünleşmek arayışı şeklinde tanımlıyoruz. DSM'de (Tanı Ölçütleri Kitabı, 4. Edisyon Amerikan Psikiyatri Derneği, 1994) yer alan maneviyat kodlamasına karşı çıkıyoruz. Maneviyat, dindarlıkla eş anlamlı veya inanç kaybı ile ilgili veyahut da kültürel çeşitliliğin bir unsuru olmadığı için bu maddenin yeniden ele alınması veya tamamen DSM'den çıkarılmasını öneriyoruz. İnsanların dindar değil ve fakat manevi doğdukları konusunda ısrar ediyor ve bu iki kavram arasındaki farkları her zaman gösteriyoruz. Söz konusu iki terim hakkında işe yarar epistemik2 çabalar elde edilmek isteniyorsa maneviyatın dindarlıktan ayrılması gerektiği sonucunu çıkarıyoruz. Dini-maneviyat (religious-spirituality) şeklindeki güncel birlikte kullanımları doğru bulmuyoruz
