The Effect of Hypertension Education On Hypertension Control

Öz:
Background:High blood pressure (HBP) is major risk factors for chronic diseases and deaths worldwide. The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of education about HT on HBP control in patients with hypertension. Method: This is an intervention study. The research is made between with HT people who have been applicant to the Family Health Centers (FHC) in the province of Yozgat, in 2013. This study was conducted with n = 241 people who agreed to participate in the study by giving verbal consent. Firstly, patients' blood pressure (BP) is measured, and then these people were trained individual by nurses about how to best controlled HBP. After one month the training, BP of the same person was measured. In collecting the data, intern nurses trained by researcher were took part. Results:Of those who took part in the research, 53.9% were women, 86.7% were age 50 and over, ages ranged between 18-83, median age was 63. 87.6% (obese 46.9%) of HT patients had higher body mass index (BMI>=25 kg/m2), average BMI was 30.1± 5.02 kg/m2. 30.7% of HT patients stated that it was diagnosed less than 5 years, 21.2% of patients stated that it was diagnosed 15 years and more. Before training, 32% of HT patients have uncontrolled BP, after training for a month, this ratio dropped to 21.2%. After the intervention, one-third percent reduction was observed among the patients were HT not under control (p<0.05). After the intervention, uncontrolled HT patients' systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) averages were decreased respectively 14.03 mmHg and 6.49 mmHg (p<0.05), while the change was not observed in those under the control of HT (p> 0.05).Conclusion:For the control of HT, it seems to be effective the individual training made by nurses. Family doctors and especially nurses monitoring to HT patients, provide training and consultancy to them about subject that are lack of knowledge and behavior change is recommended.
