THE HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE PONTOS REGION IN ANTIQUITY

Öz:
The Black Sea Region (Pontus) which has a great importance in antiquity, was located east of Halys River, west of the Apsarros River and north of the regions of Galatia and Cappadocia. The mountains in the region extend -from west to east- parallel to the coast and are characterised as steep. These mountains which contain various mineral ores, were covered with forests. The region was divided by deep valleys created by rivers. The fertile alluvial deposition that formed the plains of the region, made possible agriculture and animal husbandry. The plants and natural produce of the region were famous in the ancient world. In the coastal areas suitable for fishing, there were colonial cities founded by the Hellenes. Generally, those coastal settlements by a port had great commercial importance. Inland there were small settlements and temple states, built upon commercial routes. Several autochthonous peoples inhabiting the region, fought against each other. The core of this study is the historical geography of the Black Sea Region in antiquity and analysis of the origin of word pontos (??????) and its meanings. From ancient sources, archaeological material, numismatic finds and epigraphic documents, following the deliniation of the geographical boundaries, a description is provided of its mountains and rivers, flora and fauna, cities, temple states and autochthonous peoples.
