THE ASSOCIATION OF MOTHERING BEHAVIORS WITH EXTERNALIZING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

Öz:
This study focuses on the effect of mothering behaviors, as one of the most important factors, on the externalizing behaviors trajectories of children during the early childhood period. Specifically, the effects of maternal physical punishment and warmth/responsive behaviors on the behavioral trajectories in children were examined. The data were obtained from a 5-year longitudinal study, The Study of Early Childhood Developmental Ecologies in Turkey (ECDET).The baseline sample consists of 1052 children and their families obtained from a stratified clustered sample from 19 provinces and 33 communities designed to be nationally representative. The results indicated that children who experienced higher levels of physical punishment showed higher levels of externalizing behaviors, whereas maternal warmth and responsiveness decreased the externalizing behaviors in children
