ADAPTATION OF WARWICK-EDINBURGH MENTAL WELL-BEING SCALE SHORT FORM INTO TURKISH: VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY STUDY

Öz:
Positive psychology approach, which emphasizes the strengths of person, maximizes human functionality for the discovery and promotion of factors affecting the development of individuals and communities. The term wellbeing which is one of the basic concepts of positive psychology has attracted attention of researchers as it has a valuable contribution on quality of people’s lives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychometric qualities of Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale Short Form (WEMWBS-SF) developed by Tennant et al. (2007) on Turkish university students. The validity and reliability study of the scale was conducted on two different study groups. The study was conducted on 138 students for the first group, 256 students for the second group, a total of 394 university students. The psychometric properties of the scale were investigated by confirmatory factor analysis, criterion related validity and Cronbach alpha internal consistency methods. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis for the construct validity demonstrated that all t values are significant and the model has good fit indexes. Oxford Happiness Questionnaire Short Form (OHQ-SF), Dispositional Hope Scale (DHS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used for the criterion related validity. Significant positive correlations were found with OHQ-SF and DHS, negative correlation was found with PSS. Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient was found as .84 for the first study group and .86 for the second study group. In conclusion, the research findings show that WEMWBS-SF is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to measure mental well-being of Turkish university students.
