Nursing Senior Students' Perceived Stress and Stress Coping Behaviors

Öz:
Objective: The stress that nursing students experience in their learning process can adversely affect both their professional identity development and their health. The aim of this study was conducted to determine the perceived stress and stress coping behaviors of the senior student in the Nursing Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university. Material and Methods: The research was descriptive. The study was carried out together with nursing senior students (190) of a faculty of health sciences. Data was obtained with “student information form”, “Perceived Stress for Nursing Students” and “Stress coping behaviors scales”. The findings of the study were evaluated with SPSS 22.00 package program and p<0.05 was considered significant in all analyzes. Results: 147 (77.4%) of the students were female and their mean age was 22.43. According to the perceived stress scale sub-dimension, it was determined that the first three stress sources of the students were caused by lecturer/nurses, difficulties in giving care to the patient and tasks and workload. It was determined that students showed the most frequent avoidance behavior to deal with stress. A significant correlation was found between stress and stress coping behaviors in the correlation analysis (0.311**). Conclusion: It was determined that students showed the most frequent avoidance behavior to deal with stress and used the avoidance strategy more frequently as the perceived stress level increased. In order to manage academic and clinical practice stress levels and to increase positive coping strategies, it may be advisable to establish consultancy programs to provide appropriate support to each class.
