Objective: Adenoid hypertrophy may cause significant morbidity in children, but its association with allergic rhinitis is not clearly understood. The aim of this study is to determine the Visual Analog Scale and Total Nasal Sypmtom Scores which are used in the diagnosis and treatment folllow- up of allergic rhinitis, in children with adenoid hypertrophy. Material and Method: 209 children (144 adenoid hypertrophy group, 65 control group) were included in the study. Children's runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eye, postnasal discharge complaints were evaluated using the Total Nasal Symptom Score and allergic rhinitis related symptoms were evaluated using the Visual Analog Score. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between Total Nasal Sypmtom Scores and Visual Analog Scale scores between children with and without adenoid hypertrophy (p <0.001). Positive correlation between adenoid hypertrophy and VAS (p: 0.86; p <0.001) and TNSS (p: 0.83; p <0.001) scores were detected. Conclusion: In this study, it is concluded that the severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms increases as adenoid volume increases in patients with adenoid hypertrophy. Treatment success in patients with adenoid hypertrophy can be increased by evaluating the patients from the point of allergic rhinitis in conjunction with pediatric allergy specialists.
