Global social functioning of patients with schizophrenia and care burden of caregiving relatives

Öz:

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the global social functioning levels of patients with schizophrenia and theburden experienced by their caregivers.Methods: This study was conducted with primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in the psychiatry polyclinicsof hospitals within Ankara. The study sample included 130 primary caregivers of outpatients of psychiatric polyclinicsand was conducted between January and July of 2013. Data were collected using a patient and caregiver sociodemographic form, as well as the ‘Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale’ and the ‘Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia Scale’.Results: The study results revealed that both the caregivers’ burden level (55.80±15.90) and the patients’ global socialfunctionality level (49.96±16.34) were medium, and that there was a moderate negative correlation between them(r=-0.67, p<0.001).Conclusion: In light of these results, it is suggested that psychiatric nurses plan psychosocial interventions to diminishthe burden experienced by caregivers, and that psychosocial skills training sessions be implemented to improve theglobal social functioning of patients.

Öz:

Amaç: Bu çalışma, şizofreni hastalarının genel sosyal işlevsellik düzeylerini ve hastalara bakım veren kişilerin bakım yükünü belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışma, Ankara ilindeki hastanelerin psikiyatri polikliniklerinde tedavi gören şizofreni hastalarının primer bakım verenleri ile yürütülmüştür. Çalışmanın evreni, psikiyatri polikliniklerinde ayakta tedavi gören şizofreni hastalarına primer bakım veren 130 kişiden oluşmuştur. Çalışma, Ocak–Temmuz 2013 tarihleri arasında yürütülmüştür. Veriler hasta ve bakım veren sosyodemografik özellikler formu, Zarit Bakıcı Yük Ölçeği ve Şizofreni Hastalarında İşlevsel İyileşme Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Bu çalışma, hem bakım veren yükü (55.80±15.90) hem de hastaların genel sosyal işlevsellik düzeylerinin (49.96±16.34) orta seviyede olduğunu ve bu iki sonuç arasında orta seviyede negatif bir korelasyon olduğunu göstermiştir (r=-0.67, p<0.001). Sonuç: Bu sonuçlar ışığında, psikiyatri hemşirelerinin bakım verenlerin yükünü azaltmak için psikososyal girişimler planlaması ve hastaların genel sosyal işlevsellik düzeylerini geliştirmek üzere psikososyal beceri eğitimlerinin uygulanması önerilmektedir.
