THE ROLE OF BILINGUALISM IN ACQUIRING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Öz:

The present study emphasizes the role of bilingualism in foreign languagelearning by investigating the acquisition of English as a third language ofTurkish bilingual university students with Arabian origins. This study isbased on a phenomenologic research design which is a qualitative researchmethodology, within the interpretive research paradigm, that inquires thequalitatively diverse ways in which people experience something. The data ofthe study were gathered through a semi-structured interview developed by theresearcher and content analysis technique was utilized to analyze thecollected data. The results of the study suggest that being already proficientin both Turkish and Arabic languages facilitates the acquisition of a thirdlanguage and the already possessed languages provide an advantage inacquiring a new language.

Öz:

Bu çalışma, iki dilli olan Arap kökenli Türk üniversite öğrencilerinin üçüncü dil olarak İngilizce edinimini araştırarak iki dilliliğin yabancı dil edinimindeki rolünü vurgulamaktadır. Farklı bakış açılarını irdeleyerek olgu, olay ve kavramlara yeni bakış açıları getiren yorumlamaya dayalı yaklaşım modellerinden fenomenolojik araştırma desenine dayalı bu çalışma niteliksel bağlamda katılımcıların olayla ilgili tecrübelerini incelemektedir. Araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat soruları aracılığıyla çalışmanın verileri toplanıp içerik analizi tekniği kullanılarak veriler analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonunda elde edilen bulgular Arapça ve Türkçe dillerinde yetkin olmanın yeni bir yabancı dil edinimini kolaylaştırdığını ve sahip olunan dillerin sıfırdan edinilen dilin ediniminde avantaj olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır.
