AN ANALYSIS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS READING IN TERMS OF DIFFERENT VARIABLES

Öz:
This study has been carried out to determine the relation ofsecondary school students’ attitude towards reading with differentvariables. The research has been conducted according to descriptiverelational screening model which is one of the quantitative researchdesigns. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 384students who were 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the academicyear of 2017-2018 at a secondary school in the district of Beykoz in theprovince of İstanbul. The quantitative data of the research have beenobtained through “Personal Information Forms” and “Reading AttitudeScale for Secondary Students”. In the analysis of the data, t test, oneway variance analysis and Scheffe test have been used. The studyscrutinises whether there is a relation between the secondary schoolstudents’ attitude towards reading and age, gender, the socio-economiclevel of the family, daily reading time, daily internet using time, anddaily television watching time or not; and investigates how it is relatedwith the condition whether weekly reading hours are applied in theirschool or not and the genre they prefer to read. As a result of theresearch, the reading attitude scale scores of the students aged 9-10years have been observed to be higher compared to the students aged11-12 years and 13-14 years in the secondary school where the studyhas been carried out. Girl students’ attitude towards reading is morepositive compared to the boy students’. It has been found out that thestudents’ attitude towards reading improves as daily reading timeincreases. The relation between internet using time and televisionwatching time and the attitude towards reading is in negative direction. In the light of these results, some suggestions have been made toimprove secondary school students’ attitude towards reading.

ORTAOKUL ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN OKUMAYA YÖNELİK TUTUMLARININ FARKLI DEĞİŞKENLER AÇISINDAN İNCELENMESİ

Öz:
Bu çalışma, ortaokul öğrencilerinin okumaya dönük tutumlarının farklı değişkenlerle ilişkisini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırma, nicel araştırma desenlerinden betimsel ilişkisel tarama modeline göre yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, 2017-2018 eğitim-öğretim yılında İstanbul İli Beykoz İlçesi sınırlarında yer alan bir ortaokulun 5., 6., 7. ve 8. sınıflarında öğrenim gören toplam 384 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın nicel verileri; “Kişisel Bilgi Formu” ve “Ortaokul Öğrencilerine Yönelik Okuma Tutum Ölçeği” ile elde edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde t testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi ve Scheffe testi kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmada ortaokul öğrencilerinin okumaya yönelik tutumlarıyla yaş, cinsiyet, ailenin sosyo-ekonomik durumu, günlük kitap okumaya ayrılan süre, günlük internet kullanımı ve televizyon izlemeye ayrılan süre arasında ilişki olup olmadığı ve okullarında haftalık okuma saatinin uygulanıp uygulanmaması ile hangi türde okumayı tercih ettikleri konusundaki ilişki yordanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda; uygulamanın yapıldığı ortaokuldaki 9-10 yaş aralığındaki öğrencilerin okumaya yönelik tutum ölçeği puanlarının 11- 12 ve 13-14 yaş aralığındaki öğrencilere göre daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Kız öğrencilerin erkek öğrencilere göre okumaya yönelik tutumları ise daha olumludur. Günlük kitap okumaya yönelik süre arttıkça öğrencilerin okumaya yönelik tutumlarının da arttığı görülmüştür. İnternette kalma ve televizyon seyretme süresi ile okumaya yönelik tutum arasında negatif yönlü bir ilişki bulunmaktadır. Bu sonuçlar ışığında, ortaokul öğrencilerinin okumaya yönelik tutumlarını arttırmak için önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
