Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Their Relationship with Pain Characteristics and Disability Status in Individuals with Migraine

Öz:
Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship of gastrointestinal system (GIS) symptoms with pain characteristics and disability in patients with migraine. Materials and Methods: A total of 45 patients with migraine were included in the study. Their GIS symptoms, pain characteristics, and migraine-related disability status were evaluated using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), the last three-month mean values of pain intensity and attack frequency determined by the Visual Analogue Scale, and the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), respectively. Results: Attack frequency showed a moderate positive correlation with GSRS-total (p<0.001, rho=0.449) and GSRS-reflux (p=0.004, rho=0.424) scores, and a low-to-moderate positive correlation with GSRSindigestion (p=0.007, rho=0.394) and GSRS-constipation (p=0.007, rho=0.399) scores, while it showed no significant correlation with GSRS-abdominal pain (p=0.109, rho=0.242) and GSRS-diarrhea (p=0.096, rho=0.251) scores. Pain intensity showed no significant correlation with GSRS-total (p=0.151, rho=0.218), GSRS-abdominal pain (p=0.168, 0.209), GSRS-reflux (p=0.152, rho=0.217), GSRS-diarrhea (p=0.765, rho=0.046), GSRS-indigestion (p=0.280, rho=0.165), and GSRS-constipation (p=0.142, rho=0.222) scores. MIDAS scores showed a moderate positive correlation with GSRS-total (p=0.005, rho=0.410) and GSRSconstipation (p<0.001, rho=0.541) scores, but showed no significant correlation with GSRS-abdominal pain (p=0.108, rho=0.243), GSRS-reflux (p=0.054, rho=0.290), GSRS-diarrhea (p=0.345, rho=0.144), and GSRS-indigestion (p=0.083, rho=0.261) scores. Discussion and Conclusion: While GIS symptoms were found to have a positive correlation with attack frequency and disability, no correlation was found between GIS symptoms and pain intensity. Therefore, GIS symptoms should not be neglected in migraine patients with a high frequency of migraine attacks and with disability
