Patient-reported and Performance-based Outcome Measures for Functional Mobility and Activity Limitation in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease: A Review

Öz:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease. Bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity, and postural instability are among the main symptoms, leading to posture, balance and gait disturbances. These disturbances negatively affect individuals’ quality of life by causing activity and function limitations. In order to achieve patient-centered rehabilitation in PD, it is crucial that performancebased and patient-reported outcome measures be used together when assessing the perceived level of difficulty in daily life activities. This study aimed to compile the most appropriate patient-reported and performance-based outcome measures for assessing functional mobility and activity limitation in individuals with PD. Accordingly, the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect were searched using a variety of related keywords, and all relevant studies published by 1 July 2019 were reviewed. Thus, a number of reliable and valid outcome measures were presented, while it was observed that the number of studies comparing these measures was limited. The findings of this review study are thought to provide guidance for clinicians and researchers working with individuals with PD.
