Öz:
Purpose: The aim of this study was twofold. First, itinvestigated the extent to which in-service teachers ofEnglish were personally and professionally ready tocarry out culturally responsive teaching (CRT).Second, it aimed to understand teachers’ perceptionsof CRT.Research Method: This study was carried out in asequential explanatory mixed methods design.Accordingly, first quantitative data were gathered inthe first phase through administering CRT readinessscale. In the second phase, qualitative data weregathered through semi-structured interviews to gaindetailed insights about their perceptions. A totalnumber of 415 in-service teachers of Englishparticipated in the quantitative phase of the study, and 12 teachers participated in the semi-structuredinterviews.Findings: Quantitative findings showed significant differences between teachers' personaland professional readiness, novice and experienced teachers, and graduates of ELTdepartments and graduates of ELL and ACL departments. Qualitative findings showed thatexperience alone was a distinguishable factor for CRT and also underlined the necessity forand the importance of culture-oriented courses in undergraduate English language teachereducation.Implications for Research and Practice: Accordingly, enriching undergraduate Englishlanguage teacher education programs with culture-oriented courses is a need. Such coursesshould cover both theoretical and practical sides of multicultural education and CRT. There isalso a need to provide more opportunities for teacher candidates to execute teaching practicesin real and culturally diverse classrooms. Furthermore, the need for studies focusing on fieldspecific competencies and real classroom settings are also underlined.
