The Effect of Socila Media Platforms on Stock Markets: A Sample of BIST30

Öz:
Social media platforms have become channels where people can express themselves. Large masses can convey their opinionscompared to the media where only a part of the society has views. Due to these effects, it is of interest to researchers whether theviews on the aforementioned platforms have had an impact on many areas. In this study, we try to reveal the relationship between Twitter, one of the social media platforms, and stock prices. In the study, negative and positive tweets of 30 businesses in BIST 30were used as daily data between 02.01.2014-31.01.2020. In the study, the model obtained by Pesaran cross section dependency test,Panicca unit root test and DOLSMG estimator was estimated. All the coefficients are significant for the entire panel. The coefficient ofthe negative variable has a negative sign. In other words, unfavorable tweets about companies affect the company's stock returnsnegatively. The coefficient of the positive variable has a positive sign. In other words, positive tweets about companies positively affectthe company's stock returns. Unfavorable tweets have more impact. The coefficient of the volume variable has a positive sign. In otherwords, the size of the company's transaction volume has a positive effect on stock returns. Findings show that stock returns aresensitive to social media posts.
