Additive Manufacturing in Turkey and Its Influence on Shipbuilding

Öz:
Conventional production methods such as forging, cutting, shaping, bending, casting, welding, brazing, rolling, extrusion and machining have been considered as sole production methodologies over the centuries until the idea of additive manufacturing have been asserted. This revolutionary method has been attracting attention for almost three decades that relies on division of digital three dimensional model of part into thin layers, manufacturing and then combining of those layers. Industry is presumably to be affected dramatically by these novel technologies. Shipbuilding would therefore be easily regarded as being no exception for application of additive manufacturing technologies with ship design, construction, procurement and logistics, production of propulsion systems and ship machinery, certification and training. In this study additive manufacturing process, technologies and methods will be examined and compared against conventional production processes. Turkey’s advance in academic field and in industrial development on incremental production techniques will then be evaluated. Finally application of additive techniques in shipbuilding will be discussed.
