Does Vitamin K Intake with Diet Affect Cognitive Performance?

Öz:
Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin and is found in nature in the form of phylokinone (K1) and menakinone (K2). Menadione (K3) form is used as an synthetic analogue. Vitamin K is responsible for the carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins in metabolism. Vitamin K, which is generally known to play a role in blood coagulation, has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, vascular calcification, cancer, diabetes and glycemic control. In recent years, it has been found that menakinon-4 (MK-4) form is present in the regions where the myelinization is intense in the brain and its deficiency may be involved in the pathogenesis of cognitive performance and some neurodegenerative diseases. This effect is thought to be mediated by proteins such as Gas-6 and protein S or by protecting neurons from oxidative stress damage. The effect of anticoagulants frequently used by atrial fibrillation (AF) patients and non-vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants on cognitive performance and dementia is controversial. In this review article, the effects of vitamin K and anticoagulants on cognitive performance are discussed.
