Current Retention Applications in Orthodontics: Literature Review

Öz:
The retention period is the last and important stage of long-term orthodontic treatment. Although the ideal retention appliance decision for the patient differs according to the initial malocclusion, the patient’s age, treatment planning, and other factors, the retention appliances can generally be classified as removable and fixed appliances. The retention period has given increased attention recently with the increased follow-up period after orthodontic treatments and esthetic awareness and expectations of the patients. There are recent studies on new methods or new materials for the most reliable and efficient retention type for orthodontic patients in the literature. In this review, an overview of the retention period, and the features, advantages, disadvantages, and indications of the current retention types will be discussed.
