NOMADS AND THEIR VISIBILITY IN ANATOLIAN ARCHAEOLOGY

Öz:
This paper aims to focus on approaches dealing with nomadism in antiquity, especially in Anatolian archaeology. The first steps to sedentary life were taken after the beginning of the Epi-Palaeo-lithic, and new survival strategies were developed in the Near East. The most remarkable feature of land-based production is the requirement for complex processes. This led to specialization in certain activities like herding animals. The mobility that is caused by this kind of activity is different from that of the Palae-olithic. Ethnographic investigations reveal that nomads live side by side with sedentary communities in some cases, and sometimes within them. Philological data, particularly from Mesopotamia, also provides some information. Depending on their relationship with sedentary communities nomads are divided into two groups. The nomadism that takes place between sedentary communities, interlocked which each other, is called enclosed nomadism. The counterpart of this is excluded nomadism which does not display this kind of interlocked structure. Another classification divides nomadism according to itineraries. These are known as horizontal and vertical nomadism. The latter is very common, especially in Anatolia. We may assume that the situation was not very different in the past. Some archaeological data may indicate that nomadism caused by husbandry dates back to the Neolithic. However, the Chalcolithic appears to be the period in which segmentation of society occurs as a consequence of specialization. Through the textual sources in Mesopotamia, it is possible to recognize how the nomads there were related to the urban popu-lation. It is also possible to make some inferences that can confirm the existence of seasonal settlements in Anatolia. This is apparent in both south-western and eastern Anatolia. Considering the increasing number of textual sources in the Hittite period, nomadic communities are no longer elusive, although the documents are open to interpretation. Tensions between nomadic and sedentary communities in Anatolia arise not, as in the Middle East, due to scarcity of resources, but from the central government attempting to gain power over nomadic tribes. Although there are many difficulties in the practice of archaeological research aiming to uncover nomadism, there are still ways to clarify questions about these elusive people. This requires a change in the main question one hopes to answer through archaeological survey, and the adoption of a new strategy, including new technologies. It is also important to undertake systematic research on the material culture of the nomads.
