THE USE OF FIBULAE-PINS RELATED TO BIRTH AND PROTECTION

Öz:
Instinctively, women have played a protective role during pregnancy, childbirth, and the aftermath throughout history. In this context, women displayed apotropaic approaches to divine beings, which they believe to protect their babies from evil spirits during pregnancy and after birth. This study aims to explain the relationship between fibulae with women, superstitions, and childbirth. The first practices appear in Near Eastern societies, where it is known that pins, which functioned like fibulae, were used by women and goddesses within the context of similar beliefs. Probably, the belief about the protective aspects of fibulae and pins were also began to be reflected in the religious customs of Western societies, especially in the 1st millennium BC, as a result of factors such as acculturation or migration. Here, too, it is seen that the objects are primarily offered to the sacred areas of goddesses, especially in relation with birth. As can be seen from the inscriptions and descriptions, fibulae and pins were mostly associated with the identity of the goddesses. Within the scope of our study, the relations of fibula and pins with Lamaštu-Pazuzu in the Near East and with goddesses representing fertility from Western Anatolia to Italy was examined. In this context, the belief which continues today that fibulae and pins were a protective object against evil spirits has been explained.
