Turkish Version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale: Validity and Reliability Study

Turkish Version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale: Validity and Reliability Study
Öz: Objective: It is known that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a new type of coronavirus disease that started to spread from China to the wholeworld at the end of 2019, causes fear and anxiety among all people because of its emergence and consequences. Although the uncertainty created by this situation, witnessed for the first time, will continue in the long term, and the opinions increase curiosity and interest; it was deemedimportant to examine the individual and social reflections. Therefore, a measurement tool was needed to evaluate the impact and fear of theCOVID-19 epidemic on society. In this study, we aimed to adapt the Fear of COVID-19 Scale to Turkish and to evaluate its validity and reliability.Material and Methods: The sample of the study included adults aged 18 and over, living within the borders of Istanbul, who voluntarily agreed toparticipate in the study. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, and the Perceived Vulnerability toDisease Scale. The language adaptation of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale was made, and for the reliability study, internal consistency, item-total scorereliability coefficient, and two half-test reliability were examined; explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed todemonstrate construct validity; and for criterion-related validity, analysis was performed with a similar scale.Results: As a result of the factor analysis performed for the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, it was determined that it can be used in one dimension. It wasfound that the internal consistency coefficient of the scale, which had an average score of 61.16±8.77 was 0.867, and the item total correlationcoefficients varied between 0.600 and 0.722. As a result of the analysis for criterion-related validity, a statistically significant positive correlationwas found between the two scales (r = 0.298, P < .001).Conclusion: As a result of the analysis, the researchers believe that the Fear of COVID-19 Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool to evaluatethe impact of the pandemic process on psychological health.

Öz: sonuçları sebebiyle tüm insanlar arasında korku ve kaygıya yol açtığı bilinmektedir. İlk kez tanık olunan bu durumun yarattığı belirsizliğin uzun vadede süreceğine yönelik görüşler merakı ve ilgiyi artırırken bireysel ve toplumsal yansımalarını incelemek önemli görülmüştür. Buradan hareketle COVID-19 salgınının toplum üzerinde yarattığı etkiyi ve korkuyu değerlendirmeye yönelik ölçüm aracına ihtiyaç duyulmuştur. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın amacı COVID-19 Korkusu Ölçeği’nin Türkçe’ye uyarlanmasını sağlamak, geçerlilik ve güvenilirliğini değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırmaya gönüllü olarak katılmayı kabul eden İstanbul il sınırları içerisinde yaşayan 18 yaş ve üzeri yetişkin bireyler çalışmanın örneklemini oluşturmaktadır. Veriler, Kişisel Bilgi Formu ile COVID-19 Korkusu Ölçeği ve Hastalığa Karşı Algılanan Savunmasızlık Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. COVID-19 Korkusu Ölçeği’nin dil uyarlaması yapılmış olup güvenilirlik çalışması için iç tutarlılık, madde-toplam puan güvenilirlik katsayısı ve iki yarı test güvenilirliği incelenmiş; yapı geçerliliğini ortaya koymaya yönelik Açıklayıcı Faktör Analizi (AFA) ve Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi (DFA); ölçüt bağıntılı geçerlilik için ise benzer ölçek ile analiz yapılmıştır. Bulgular: COVID-19 Korkusu Ölçeği için yapılan faktör analizi sonucunda tek boyutlu olarak kullanılabileceği belirlenmiştir. Ortalama puanı 61,16±8,77 olan ölçeğin iç tutarlılık katsayısının 0,867 olduğu, madde toplam korelasyon katsayılarının 0,600 ile 0,722 arasında değişim gösterdiği bulunmuştur. Ölçüt bağıntılı geçerlilik için yapılan analiz sonucunda iki ölçek arasında (r = 0,298, P < ,001) pozitif yönde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki görülmüştür. Sonuç: Araştırmacılar, yapılan analizler sonucunda COVID-19 Korkusu Ölçeği’nin, pandemi sürecinin psikolojik sağlık üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirmek amacıyla geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğu kanısındadır.
