Layering in representation: Rethinking architectural representation through Perry Kulper’s works

Öz:
“Layered representations” in architecture create a ‘personal’ language with theircomplex structures and can be accepted as creative tools for thinking and designingarchitectural space in a performative way. These kinds of multiple/interwovenrepresentations that are produced by the overlapping and manipulation of bothdesign tools and ideas are valuable in the context of their original narrativesand present an alternative approach in the dialog with space by expanding theboundaries of architectural representations. This study aims to focus on thesenew forms of architectural representation and discusses them through “personalknowledgetheory”. Within the scope of the study, some of Perry Kulper’s worksare chosen and examined as case-studies. Dual readings, which are discussedthrough the concepts of ‘design thinking and designing act’, as well as ‘explicitand tacit knowledge’, constitute the methodology of this study. Selected worksand their architectural narratives are then discussed based on these dual readings.Depending on outcomes, it can be suggested that although layered representationsproduce singularities through personal knowledge, these singularities include/carry the possibility of creating alternative spatial worlds and atmospheres inarchitecture.
