Epistemic Injustice and Cultural Processes in Education

Öz:
This article provides a framework for understanding social and cultural inequalities in education in the context of culturalprocesses and epistemic injustice. Insight into the cultural processes and the concept of epistemic injustice direct us to theconceptualization of agency of the actors within the educational domain and the institutionalized relations of domination andrecognition. The article employs two cultural processes: identification (stigmatization and racialization) and rationalization(standardization and evaluation) and two epistemic injustice models: testimonial and hermeneutical injustice to understandthe production of inequalities and relations of domination in a school setting (Lamont, Beljean and Clair, 2014; Fricker, 2017).This goal is animated by this research question: “How to understand the production of inequalities in a school setting throughcultural processes and epistemic injustice?” Taking into account cultural processes and epistemic injustice, this article arguesthat the literature on education should include diverse epistemic approaches to problematize the ways of the transmission ofstructural inequalities in society to education and how these inequality forms are complementary to current practices. Thisarticle indicates that cultural processes and epistemic injustice forms should be taken into consideration in understanding theproduction and maintenance of inequalities in education.

Eğitim Alanında Epistemik Adaletsizlik ve Kültürel Süreçler

Öz:
Bu makale, eğitim alanındaki sosyal ve kültürel eşitsizlikleri kültürel süreçler ve epistemik adaletsiz kavramı bağlamlarında incelemektedir. Kültürel süreçler ve epistemik adaletsiz kavramları, eğitim alanı içerisindeki aktörlerin öznelliklerinin kavramsallaştırılmasında ve kurumsallaşmış tahakküm ve tanınma ilişkilerinin çözümlemesinde belirleyicidir. Bu makalede kültürel süreçler literatüre dayanarak iki kategori altında incelenmektedir: Özdeşleşme (damgalama ve ırksallaştırma) ve rasyonelleştirme (standardizasyon ve değerlendirme). Epistemik adaletsizlik kavramı ise tanıksal ve yorumsal adaletsizlik olarak incelenecektir. Makalenin ele aldığı araştırma sorusu: “Okul kurumu içerisinde ki eşitsizlikleri kültürel süreçler ve epistemik adaletsizlik mekanizması ile nasıl anlamlandırabiliriz”? Kültürel süreçler ve epistemik adaletsizlik kavramı merkeze alınarak, bu makale toplumdaki yapısal eşitsizliklerin eğitim alanında var olma biçimlerine, okulun bileşenleri ile kurdukları ilişkiselliklere ve eşitsizlik formlarının eğitim alanındaki mevcut uygulamaların nasıl tamamlayıcı unsurları haline geldiğini sorunsallaştıran bir epistemik yaklaşımın önemini vurgulamakta ve tartışmaya açmaktadır. Bu çalışma eğitimdeki eşitsizliklerin üretimi ve sürdürülmesinin anlaşılmasında toplumsal kültürel süreçlerin ve epistemik adaletsizlik mekanizmasının belirleyici rolünü tartışmakta, eşitsizliklerin devamlılığını sağlayan yapıları ve ilişkisellikleri detayları ile tartışmaktadır.
