"Akdenizlilik" Üzerine Strateji Kurulabilir mi? -Metodolojik Bir Değerlendirme-
Öz: Bin yılı aşkın süre ile dünyanın merkezi olan Akdeniz'in kültürel bütünlük arzeden belirgin bir "kültür alanı" oluşturduğu tezi, modern düşün ve yaşam biçiminin asimetrik yayılımı dolayısıyla ampirik olarak saptanması giderek güçleşen bir önermeye dönüşmüştür. Buna karşın, yapısal bir çerçeveden bakınca, pek çok farklı öğeyi barındıran İç Deniz havzasında başta bu farklılıkların abartılı vurgulanması olmak üzere ortak kültürel ve varoluşsal biçimlerin sürdükleri görülebilmektedir. Bu kültürel ortaklıkların jeopolitik ve daha genel anlamda politik avantaj haline dönüştürülmesi Akdeniz toplumlarının global ilişkiler örüntüsünde alacakları yeri belirleyebilme yetenekleri ile orantılıdır.

Öz: For more than a millennium the Mediterranean figured as one main stage of world political and cultural affairs. Despite the diversity of the people and the cultures flanking the Inner Sea, it was possible to postulate the Mediterranean as a distinct "culture area" depending on empirical observations. Although with the progressive and asymmetrical onset of modernity in the region, such empirical data are harder to come by, a structural analysis of the ways of seeing, doing, thinking and being in the Mediterranean can still be said to possess common cultural traits. In the rise of global political processes, it is another question how these traits may be employed to gain geopolitical, or more importantly, political prominence by the people of the Mediterranean.
