Transhumanism, Posthumanism and the New Scope of Human Consciousness

Öz:
This study aims that the concepts of transhumanism and posthumanism are introduced to Turkish readers and Turkish researchers and the analysis of both concepts in terms of human consciousness. The study is one of the first studies in the world to examine transhumanism based on its own literature and posthumanism based on its own literature in a comparative way. Many phenomena and concepts such as digital age society, which is a new stage of global capitalism, bio-technological developments, robots that have evolved into a conscious species through artificial intelligence, the internet of commodities and online religion have brought two philosophical literatures which have produced in the framework of transhumanism and posthumanism to the agenda of Turkey as well as the world. Transhumanism literature, which refers to the bodily competence of man, and posthumanism literature, which refers to conscious competence of man within the framework of social communication and division labor, share the same opinion that people will evolve into a different consciousness in comparison to before. Nevertheless, the two concepts differ from each other in terms of the philosophical traditions to which they belong and the arguments they use and the future human goals. The most important criticism of both concepts is that both concepts are inadequate in the context of meaning of life. In addition, the concept of transumanare is seen as a continuation of the concept of perfect humanity (insān-ı kāmil) in the medieval Islamic Sufism literature. Today, Muslim societies have also gained the characteristics of digital society to a large extent and Islam has started to gain the character of online religion. On such a world scale, transhumanism and posthumanism contain some common philosophical agendas to which Muslim thought can also contribute. In this respect, the study examines transhumanism and posthumanism in terms of history and literature and tries to show that both have evaluated the common achievements of all humanity in terms of philosophical consciousness.
