The Relation of High Structures with the Urban Texture: Examples of London and Paris

Öz:

The positioning of high structures createsimportant effects on the city silhouette; evensometimes it is created by them. Thissilhouette could be in close relationship withthe historical regions as well as developingoutside the city. It was observed that tallbuildings developed in two different ways inLondon and Paris. This study aims toexamine the urban texture of tall buildingareas in two cities in terms of architecturaland urban design aspects. The historicaldevelopment of London and Paris, and therole of tall buildings in this process werecompared. High buildings in Londondeveloped alongside with the historicaltexture, while in Paris they located in anespecially reserved area outside the city.These different situations have developedwith the city dwellers’ lifestyles, as well ascreated spatially different effects on them. Inthis context, the relationship of tall buildingswith urban fabric is examined, and anexample of a high building selected fromeach city is discussed. These examples areThe Leadenhall from London and Tour Firstfrom Paris. It was concluded that thelocations of the high buildings have animportant role in the urban texture, and italso depends on politics to make decisions.
