Aim: To evaluate tear function tests and meibomian gland functions in patients with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Material and Method: Fifty-three patients diagnosed with PCOS by Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Kırıkkale University Medical Faculty and 25 healthy individuals were included in the study, constituting PCOS and control groups, respectively. In both groups tear break-up time (BUT) measurements were done for evaluating the stability of tear film and Schirmer I test was used for lacrimal gland functions. Meibomianitis findings were also recorded and all data were compared statistically between the 2 groups. Result: There were statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of meibomianitis incidence, mean BUT score, the percentages of cases with low BUT score (<10 seconds) and mean Schirmer test results. Meibomianitis incidence was 22.6% in PCOS group and10% in the control group. Mean BUT score was 12.12±3.47 seconds in PCOS patients and 14.14±3.85 seconds in the control group (p=0.002). The percentage of cases with low BUT score was 28,3% in PCOS group and 10% in the control group (p=0.007). In Schirmer test mean filter paper moisturing level was 20.12±7.41 mm in PCOS group and 15.88±4.65 mm in the control group (p=0.001). The Schirmer test scores in PCOS group were abnormal in 3.8%, suspicious in 3.8%, and normal in 92.5% of patients while those numbers were 2%, 4%, and 94% in the control group, respectively (p>0.05). Conclusion: In PCOS patients, dry eye findings triggered by hormonal instabilities are encountered at a rate that cannot be underestimated. Therefore patients with PCOS diagnosis should be referred to ophthalmology department for evaluation of dry eye.
