HIRVAT MİLLİYETÇİLİĞİNDE DİL UNSURUNUN ROLÜ
Öz: Bu çalışmada dilin millî kimlik oluşumundaki rolünden hareketle Hır- vat milliyetçiliğ inin gelişim sürecinde dil unsurunun nasıl bir işlev üst- lendiğ i incelenecektir. Hırvat milliyetçiliğ inin başlang ıcı olarak kabuledilen İlirizm, Hırvatçı bir hareketten ziyade bölgesel kimlikler arasın- da dil birliğ inin sağlanmasına yoğ unlaşan bir pannasyonalist hareketniteliğ indedir. Döneminin Panslavist düşüncelerinden esinlenen İli- rizm, kendisinden sonra g ündeme gelen Yugoslavist düşünceye zeminhazırlamıştır. Hırvatçanın diğer Güney Slav dillerinden f arklılaştırıl- masına yönelik çalışmalar ise Avrupada f aşist rej imlerin yükseldiğ i yıl- larda yoğ unlaşmıştır. Benzer çabalar Yugoslavyanın dağ ılma sürecindeyeniden canlanmışsa da Hırvatistanın Avrupa Birliğ ine üyelik süreciy- le birlikte milliyetçi dil p olitikalarında yumuşama görülmüştür. Bura- dan hareketle, Hırvat dil milliyetçiliğ inin tarihsel olarak Avrupadakisiyasî dönüşümlere ayak uydurduğ u söylenebilir. Ancak Hırvatça, herhalükârda Hırvat millî kimliğ ininin simgesi olma işlevini korumuştur.

THE ROLE OF LAN GUAGE IN CROATIAN NATIONALISM
Öz: With ref erence to the role of lang uage in the f ormation of national iden- tities, this study aims to analyze how the element of lang uage f unctionedin the develop ment of Croatian nationalism. Although some researcherssee it as the inchoation of Croatian nationalism, Illyrism is not a Cro- atist lang uage but a kind of pan-nationalist movement aiming to createa ling uistic union among the South Slav p eoples. Having been insp iredby the Pan-Slavism of its time, Illyrism paved the way f or Yugoslavism,which emerged in the subsequent course. Eff orts to make Croatian dif - f erent f rom other South Slav lang uages concentrated in the years whenf ascist reg imes ascended. Similar eff orts revived during the break-upof Yugoslavia. However, nationalist lang uage p olicies were moderatedduring Croatia s membership to the Europ ean Union. From this p ointof view, it can be said that Croatian ling uistic nationalism historicallyadap ted itself to the p olitical transf ormations in Europ e. In any case,Croatian lang uage has sustained its f unction of being a symbol of Croa- tian national identity.
